Setting up MultiRack Native is very easy. Six racks added to a MultiRack session. The open plug-in menu displays available EQs. You can add up to 64 racks per session, each with a maximum of eight plug-ins. At any time, you can switch a mono rack into stereo or vice versa.

This arrangement enabled me to run my favorite plug-in EQs and compressors on any analog desk—and believe me; some of those older desks had terrible onboard EQ! MultiRack Native can be incorporated much more elegantly when using mixers that also function as audio interfaces. Take for example the PreSonus StudioLive The MultiRack Preferences Window.

Take a look at Figure 2, which shows the preferences window of MultiRack. In the background you can see a rack that was created for a live show using the StudioLive The rack is filled with plug-ins for kick, snare, toms, etc.

The mixer receives its channel signal from the FireWire return, which in this case is the output of the MultiRack—including all of your favorite plugins! Now you have the channel processing from the StudioLive plus the plug-ins patched via MultiRack. SoundGrid employs standard Ethernet hardware to stream audio and moves the plug-in processing to a dedicated DSP server, yielding lower latency, higher channel count, a more stable environment, and recording capabilities via the network.

Audio is streamed from the audio interface card to the server, processed with Waves plug-ins, and streamed back to the card. Serve It Up! It should be noted that even at the entry level—the SoundGrid Compact Server—up to 34 plug-ins can be used, with less than 2ms of latency.

The SoundGrid Inventory window displays all system components.

The Compact Server reduces latency to less than samples while the Impact reduces it to around 50 samples both at 48 kHz. Last, under the Audio menu, check SoundGrid Connections. When you open the input or output rails in the rack, the correct connections appear. The SoundGrid Connections window. MultiRack and the Yamaha WSG-Y16 interface are both set as sources and destinations, enabling bi-directional audio routing. At the 01V96i you need to address a critical parameter or all of your efforts will be for naught.

Follow the red arrow in Figure 5. To avoid confusion, make every effort to set the card slot numbers to match the channel number i. Once these parameters are set, the channel audio will be routed out of the WSGY to the network, picked up by the SoundGrid Server, processed with the Waves plug-ins of your choice. Audio flows from left to right, so the gate is first in the signal flow, followed by the limiter, and then the EQ. This order is very deliberate. Gating removes unwanted leakage from the kick microphone and keeps it from being processed.

In November of I finally took delivery of my most prized possession: a Midas M Over the last few months I've been slowly learning how to dial it in.

Learning the EQ, tweaking compressor settings, and having fun seeing what the internal "plugins" do to my channels. However, in the back of my mind I've always wanted more. I've always known there was ways to use plugins live, but they've always been just out of reach.

Until recently.

A FREE application that gives rock solid multi-tracking and playback for those wanting a simple to use program. But wait! Needless to say, within 10 minutes of getting the email I had made the purchase. I knew to get started wrapping my head around MultiRack I'd need to rely on some one-on-one time with the M32 and virtual sound check.

After spending about an hour thinking about it and another 30 minutes experimenting I found what would be the best way to implement MultiRack. To understand exactly why, you need to understand how I use the console.

I typically run FOH and monitors from the same console. The primary band I work with uses the P16 mixers and in-ears so I knew having any additional latency would not work. I also demand that I'm able to multi-track the inputs, so that also weighs in. Therefore, I decided to run MultiRack as an insert on the channels. Do to the M32's lovely patching system sarcasmI am limited to 6 true inserts. To configure this, you need to patch both ends of the Insert.

Under your routing section, go to the card out page. This effectively routes the "send" portion of the Insert to card outputs It should look like this:. Now you have to patch the Insert's return. To do this, arrow over to the home tab of the routing section. Here you probably have inputs set to be Local x-x or AES50 if you're using stage boxes. The last column is the Aux In Remap. This is where you need to tell the Aux Inputs to be Card Again, thanks for this semi-constricting routing option.

If I could suggest allowing to patch from any of the card returns that would be splendid. The problem with using Card for Inserts only is because it mucks up Virtual Sound Check possibilities.
